Abstract
1,119,410. Current measurement; magnetometers. BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORP. (OPERATING) Ltd. Dec. 8, 1966 [Dec. 8, 1965], No. 52097/65. Headings G1A, G1N and G1U. In a system for measuring current in a high voltage power line, the magnetic field produced by the current is used to produce the Faraday effect in a film of ferro- or ferrimagnetic material adjacent the line, so as to rotate the plane of polarization of a polarized light or microwave beam passing through the material. In a system using a light beam, the beam 1 is polarized at 3 and then passed through an iron film 5 which is 0À001 cm thick and lies in the field of conductor 6. The beam after reflection at 7 is rotated again by a second passage through the film and then passed through an analyzer 9 to a photo-detector 10. The amount of rotation of the analyzer to give a minimum detected signal measures the strength of the current. Alternatively a polarized microwave beam may be received at the open end of a circular waveguide 5, Fig. 2 containing a ferrite rod (4) in the field of the conductor 6. The polarized beam is reflected from the short circuited end of the guide to pass again through the rod before being radiated to be received at an aerial (7), whereafter its rotation is analyzed.
