Abstract

Apparatus for applying an adhesive strip k, Fig. 1, to the spine and adjacent sides of covers of a book block Bl (Fig. 3) comprises a table surface 4 along which are disposed three sets of guides 5, 5a; 6, 7 and 8, 9, Fig. 2, defining a channel through which the book block is advanced during application of the strip k, slipped through slot 19 into contact with the spine, whereby the strip k, which is disposed in the plane of the table surface 4, is folded upwardly by the flared surfaces of the guides 6, 7 into contact with the sides of the block covers and applied firmly to the sides and the spine by a set of rollers 45, 44 and 40, respectively. In operation the leading edge of the strip k, is formed by cutting the strip by transverse cutting blades 28, 30 when the book block is advanced along guides 6, 7 and 8, 9 into abutment with a stop 33 disposed from the cutting blades at a distance h, which corresponds to the length of the book block. To cope with blocks of different lengths and thickness the guides 5, 7, 9 are adjustable relative to fixed guides 5a, 6, 8 and the stop 33 is adjustable along slot 36. Adhesive strip k, Fig. 1, is guided laterally by guides 21 and aligned with respect to the centre line of the channel by mounting the strip supply roll r on a spindle 68, Fig. 2, journalled in an eccentric bush 69.
