Abstract

1,118,653. Gas turbine combustion chambers; gas turbine plant. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. March 7, 1966 [March 11, 1965], No. 9815/66. Headings F1G and F1L. A toroidal gas turbine combustion chamber 49 has a compressed fuel/air mixture introduced thereto, the mixture being mixed within the chamber with substantially completely burnt combustion gases so as to heat the fuel component above its oxidation temperature and maintain flameless combustion. Flameless combustion is defined as burning of the fuel/air mixture uniformly throughout the combustion chamber without propagation of a flame front. Liquid fuel is added to the air entering a centrifugal compressor 42 by a carburettor 48. The compressed fuel/ air mixture passes through a diffuser 51 to enter the toroidal combustion chamber 49 at a velocity of about 100 ft/sec. The entering mixture is heated by recirculating combustion gases and remains in the chamber 49 at least 0À1 seconds so that flameless combustion to about 800 or 900‹C. proceeds. The combustion gases leaving the chamber drive an inward flow turbine 43 integral with the compressor 42 and connected to a power output shaft 44. A spark plug 52 is used at starting. A cooling air-flow is circulated over the turbine 43 at 46. Water may also be injected into the fuel/air mixture to assist cooling. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the compressor (31) and turbine (34) are both axial-flow and the combustion chamber (33) is provided with an annular plate (36) having holes (37), the plate assisting the recirculation of the combustion gases. A similar plate may be provided in combustion chamber 49, the chamber (33) may also be insulated to reduce heat losses. Gaseous fuels may be used in the invention. The fuel may be introduced into the diffuser downstream of the compressor.
