Abstract

111,843. Dudley, H. M. Dec. 5, 1916, [Convention date]. Circulating or passing fluids through materials. -Relates to apparatus for dyeing fibrous material and consists in providing means for rendering uniform the flow of the dyeing-liquid through the mass of fibrous material. Means also are provided for ascertaining the progress of the dyeing and the temperature of the dyeing-liquid The bottom plate 12 and adjustable top plate 20 of a dyeing chamber 7 are provided with divergent openings 14, 21 respectively which are preferably of double truncated cone shape as shown. A lower chamber 8 containing a steam pipe 43 is provided with a bottom 16 having divergent openings 19, each of which is connected by an upwardly divergent tube 17 in a shell 10 to a divergent hole in a plate 18 forming the base of the shell 10. A rotary pump 25 connected by pipes 26, 27 to the base of the shell 10 and by pipes 29, 30 to the space above the top plate 20 maintains a constant upward flow of liquid through the apparatus and, owing to the divergent shape of all the passages through which the liquid passes, the formation of definite streams of liquid is avoided. The lower chamber 8 connects by a pipe 34 and valve 55 with an apparatus 33 which is a smaller reproduction of the larger apparatus except that the top is closed by a screw cap 35 which is connected by a pipe 36 with the upper portion of the larger apparatus. A sample of the material being dyed is placed in this smaller apparatus 33 at the commencement of the dyeing operation and, by closing the valve 55, the sample can be examined and the progress of the dyeing ascertained. The temperature of the dyeing- liquid is indicated by a thermometer 39 in a chamber 38 which is connected with the chamber 8 by a pipe 37 and with the top of the apparatus by a pipe 40.
