Abstract

1,118,176. Steering endless-track vehicles. BOFORS A.B. 2 Dec., 1965 [3 Dec., 1964], No. 51287/65. Heading B7H. In a steering system for an endless-track vehicle comprising track drive sprockets 3, 4 coupled to a primary drive from the vehicle engine 12 through clutches 18, 19 and brakes 20, 21 and also to a secondary drive arranged to vary the relative speed of the sprockets, means are provided whereby either the steering effect produced by the clutches and brakes or the steering effect produced by the secondary drive is automatically applied in opposite fashion when the vehicle is reversed without altering the setting of the steering control member. In a system basically as described in Specification 1,078,629 there is provided a change-over valve 22 arranged to connect the hydraulic pipes 32 33 and 34, 35 extending between the steering control valve unit 23 and the brake and clutch cylinders in opposite fashion when reverse is selected in the gear-box 10 by actuating the lever 15 of a control box 14. The change-over valve 22 comprises a valve spool (Fig. 2, not shown) which is spring-loaded into a first position occupied during forward travel, and is moved to a second position when reverse is selected by fluid pressure applied through a control valve actuated by a solenoid energized from the control box 14 through a conductor 24. In another embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) the direction of the secondary drive is reversed when reverse is selected in the gear-box 10 by a lever mechanism arranged such that continuously-variable hydrostatic gearing providing the secondary drive is adjusted in opposite fashion by movement of the steering control member when the vehicle is travelling in reverse.
