Abstract

1,118,083. Ski training and practising apparatus. G. D. MARVIN; M.. J. PROSSER and H. SCUDAMORE. 29 March, 1966 [30 March, 1965], No. 13391/65. Heading A6M. An apparatus for simulating water skiing conditions consists of an upwardly open water channel and pump means for maintaining a continuous flow of water thus providing a water surface on which a trainee is supported, for skiing practice or training. The apparatus preferably consists of two channels 13 and 14 (Figure 1) arranged so that a continuous flow of water is maintained uniformly over the whole width of the channels, the circulation being maintained by a pump 15 and motor 16. In order that the trainee may remain, in a constant position relative to the channel, the trainee should be supported in a suitable harness. A sluice gate 18 is provided upstream of both channels to maintain a proper depth of water in them. The channels may be inclined to the horizontal as in Figure 2 (not shown). Suitable means may be provided for producing waves on the water surface. Such means may consist of reciprocating members for disturbing the surface, cyclically varying the speed of the motor, using a suitable flow regulating device, or cyclically raising and lowering the sluices. Alternatively, a smooth flow of water may be obtained by fitting guide vanes 42 [Figure 5, not shown] to the channels. Tanks are fitted beneath the channels to store water when the apparatus is not in use.
