Abstract

1,117,942. Injection moulding sealing rings. HEPWORTH IRON CO. Ltd. 3 Jan., 1966 [3 Oct., 1964], No. 40369/64. Heading B5A. A moulding comprising a succession of synthetic rubber 0-rings spaced apart by integral thin connecting portions is made by injection moulding, the moulding is removed from the mould and the connecting portions are severed to separate the rings. The method comprises the steps of bringing together two longitudinally parting mould halves 1 urged to the open position by springs 21 and carried on one platen of an injection machine by a mounting plate (4) having a central bore (6) which locates a spigot (7) of a core 8, while mounted on the other platen (not shown) is a mounting plate 14 seating a core 11 having a spigot (12) and central bore 25. As the platens move together dowels 18 enter holes (17) in the plate (4) before diverging dowels 19 enter corresponding holes 20 in the mould halves 1 to close these about the cores 8, 11. A central nozzle-receiving sprue (24) in a locking plate 16 connects with the bore 25 which leads by central, radial passages 26 in the end of core(s) 11 to four gates (27) circumferentially spaced round an 0-ring forming cavity 28 which is connected at each side to a similar cavity 28A by four gates 29 radially offset with respect to the gates (27). Likewise cavities 28B, 28C are connected by gates 29A, 29B each radially offset with respect to the preceding one(s) so that all the rubber to a given cavity unites prior to passing to the next. The last cavities 28C in each core are connected by gates 29C to overflow cavities 30. After injection, the rubber is cured by heaters in the mould or cores, the mould is then opened, the moulding staying on the core 11 from which it is subsequently manually stripped. Each 0-ring 33 is separated by cutting knives or wires. In a modification (Fig. 6, not shown) the 0-rings are connected by relatively thin tubular portions (36) which may be severed by smashing after freezing with solid carbon dioxide. The cores may be collapsible or expansible, while the rubber is butyl or like synthetic rubber.
