Abstract

[Also in Division F4] At least two rows of fins 4 are disposed in a fluid flow path 2 bounded by a heat transfer surface 1, each fin being inclined to the fluid flow direction at an angle of less than 25 degrees, and the rows being spaced apart in the direction of fluid flow by a distance of from 1 to 50 times the height of the fin, the arrangement being such as to generate in the fluid a trailing vortex 5 having its axis parallel to the general flow direction of the fluid over the surface. Each fin may be bonded or held by friction to the surface. Alternatively, the leading edge of the surface may be deformed to provide a row of the fins and in one such arrangement one edge of a strip 43, Fig. 10, is so deformed, the strip then being bent into the shape of an annulus which can be wrapped circumferentially around the outer surface of a nuclear fuel element and there held in position by brazing or spot welding. An apparatus is also described (Figs. 13 to 15) for testing the effect on the heat exchange surface of various shapes of baffle, typical examples being illustrated (Figs. 16 to 19).
