Abstract

1,117,796. Air heating stoves. TRANE CO. 2 June, 1966 [5 Nov., 1965], No. 24648/66. Heading F4S. An air heater has disposed within, and spaced from, its outer casing 4 a combustion chamber 1 so defining a passageway 6 within which air, supplied by a fan 2, is heated said combustion chamber being supported from the casing 4 solely by means of conduits 8 and 10, the former being an air and fuel inlet and the latter a gas outlet. A hollow cylindrical member 50, disposed within the upper end of chamber 1, defines a combustion gas passage 52, said member 50 having at its bottom end a concave sealing wall 54 and at its top end a volute shaped groove 56, the upper inclined edge 62 of which is welded about its periphery to the top edge of combustion chamber 1. By virtue of the concave wall 54 and the volute shape of the combustion gas discharge space 58, formed between the groove 56 and surrounding walls of said combustion chamber 1, a substantially equal combustion gas flow is realized throughout the annular passageway 52. The outer casing 4 rests on a rectangular base 46 and is connected thereto by means of a slip joint 44 which permits the selection of any angular orientation of the chamber 4. Fuel control means 20, 18 and 16 are housed within a cover 22, which being open at the bottom permits the entry of combustion air, this then being induced into the venturi shaped burner 12 by the flow of fuel gas in pipe 14. The gas outlet communicates with an exhaust stack 26 provided at the top of cover 22. Air supplied by fan 2, the tip of whose blades 32 extend into the passageway 6, is heated by walls 29 and 28 of chamber 1 with some of this heated air being forced by means of a scoop 64 to pass into member 50 where it is further heated before leaving the exchanger. Obstruction of air flow within duct 6 is minimized by making the duet 8 of airfoil section; vanes 5 serve to substantially reduce the swirling motion of air before it leaves the top of the annular passageway 6.
