Abstract
Metal fibres of length less than two inches and length to mean dimension in cross-section greater than 10 to 1 have a coloured coating. The fibre may be of substantially rectangular cross-section with a coloured coating on opposed major surfaces thereof. The metal may be copper, iron, steel, stainless steel or aluminium and the colour coating may be of an epoxy resin. The fibres may be made into a metal compact wherein each of the fibres is bonded to adjoining fibres at their respective points of contacts by means of a non-metallic bonding agent. A plastics material may be supported at the interstices of such a felted mass. Alternatively the metal fibres may be disposed randomly in a plastics matrix. The metal fibres may also be adhered to a flexible substrate which may be light transparent. A further p surface sheet of transparent material may be added at that side of the fiber surface remote from the substrate member. The fibres may be formed by the fibres may be prepared by making a sandwich member consisting of a composite colour coated metal sheet and cutting a sandwich member into threads.ALSO:Metal fibres of length less than two inches and length to mean dimension in cross-section greater than 10 to 1 have a coloured coating. The fibres may be of substantially rectangular cross-section with coloured coatings on opposed major surfaces and are preferably kinked or curled thereof. The metal may be copper, iron, steel, stainless steel or aluminium. The colour coating may be of an epoxy resin. The fibres may be made into a metal compact comprising a felted fibre mass wherein each of the fibres is bonded to adjoining fibres at their respective points of contacts by means of a non-metallic bonding agent. The fibres can be felted through air into a mould or from a slurry, e.g. using glycerine or water as carrier. Machine oil or glycerine may assist inter-fibre adherence in the felt. A plastics material may be supported at the interstices of the felted fibre mass. Alternatively the coated of the felted fibre. Alternatively the coated metal fibres may be disposed randomly in a plastics matrix. The plastics material can be thermosetting, e.g. epoxy resins, polyesters, phenol-formaldehyde resin, urea formaldehyde resins, melamine and furane-furfural resins; or thermoplastic, e.g. polystyrene, vinyl resins, polyurethane, nylon, polyethylene, p polypropylene, butryrate resins and "Mylar" (Trade Mark). The plastics material be poured into the felted fibres in the uncured liquid state and then cured in situ.
