Abstract

1,117,529. Sails. J. D. LE H. GUITON. 1 Dec., 1966 [1 Sept., 1965], No. 36078/65. Heading B7V. A sail 5 for a vessel having a mast 3 which is supported without intermediate stays, crosstrees or spreaders is formed along its leading edge 13 with a fold so that the luff 15 includes two parts 17, 19 between which the mast is disposed, the leech 51 of the sail is rounded, leech supporting means comprising battens 55 are secured to the sail in pockets 53 extending from the leech to parts of the luff adjacent the mast, and a sail reinforcement or saddle 57 extends between the two parts 17, 19 of the luff for transmitting thrust from the battens to the mast. The hollow, tapered, aluminium mast 3 is built out with balsa wood to a circular section of constant diameter throughout . its height. Fig. 4 shows the leading edge 13 of the sail forward of the mast 3 with the space between them filled with sponge rubber 59. The upper edge of the sail 5 has secured thereto a supporting collar secured to the halyard 9. In another embodiment (Figs. 8-10, not shown) the sail comprises two similar sections joined together at the leading edge of the sail, the portion of each section aft of the thrust transmitting saddle being able to pivot independently of the other part about an upstanding line adjacent the thrust transmitting means. The two sections are attached at the foot of the sail to two respective booms which may be secured together so that the effective sail area is that of one section or alternatively the booms may be allowed to separate and move into aligned positions athwartship to that the effective sail area is equal to the combined area of the two sections. Said leech supporting means may include part-length battens extending from the leech a short distance towards the luff.
