Abstract

111,742. Birmingham Railway Carriage & Wagon Co., and Holloway, H. H. Jan. 3, 1917. Blocks; compensating for wear.- Excessive play in vehicle brake mechanism due to wear of the brake blocks is taken up by automatic adjustment of. the block. According to the arrangement shown, a wedge block F is interposed in the brakeblock holder B between the block and a block G on the pin E which connects the push rods or brake beam to the block, and this pin E is arranged to slide horizontally in the block-holder. A pin 25 on the blockholder engages an eye 33 in a regulating bar H adapted to slide in guides 28 on a plate I fixed to the vehicle framing J. Movement of the bar H away from the wheel is prevented by a pair of friction detente 26, 27. If, in applying the brakes, the movement of the blocks, owing to wear having taken place, exceeds that allowed by the eye 33 in the bar H, this bar is carried towards the wheel with the block. During the release of the brakes, the block and its holder can move away from the wheel only the distance allowed by the eve 33 in the bar H and as the mechanism is moved to the same extent as during the application of the brakes the pin E and its block G slides away from the block against the spring 19 disposed in the holder B and the block F is forced down by the spring 11 to take up the excess play. The drawings show the arrangement for the bogie of a railway or tramway vehicle. The brake blocks are supported from the vehicle framing 7 by links D<2> through which the pins E on the brake beam pass and rollers 9 on the links working in guides 10, 10<x> on the block-holder B give further support to the blocks and prevent rotation thereof about the pin E. The release position of the mechanism may be determined by a stop 56. formed on the links for abutment against the framing 7. The blocks A are secured to the holder B by conical screw pins 1. The eye 33 in the bar II is of sufficient vertical length to allow of the vertical displacement of the brake block with the vehicle framing on the bearing springs and when, as shown, the brake blocks are hung low the eye, 33 must be tapered to allow for the varying amount of play the blocks require according to their vertical displacement. As shown in Fig. 1, the wedge block F and application block G have interengaging teeth, but if a finer adjustment is desired than is thus permitted, the faces of these blocks may be smooth and upward movement of the block F during applications of the brake be prevented by a friction detent device of the kind (26, 27) provided for the regulating bar H. Application of the invention to a wagon (shunter's) brake is described also in which the pins E pass through the usual push rods connected to arms on a tumbler shaft operated by side levels.
