Abstract

A shoe shank member for reinforcing a shoe insole consists of longitudinally extending glass fibres bonded together by a styrene acrylonitrile copolymer resin. The stiffener is made by impregnating glass fibre roving with the resin and bonding the rovings together under heat and pressure to form a strip having a cross-section of between 0.1 and 0.04 sq. in., and a resin content of 20% to 45% by weight. The strip is then cut to the required length and the stiffener is heated to 200 DEG C. and moulded on to the insole. A thermoplastic adhesive may be used to improve the bond between the insole and the stiffener.
