An element for random packing in a gas/ liquid contact column has marginal portions 2 and 3 joined by strips 5-9, adjacent strips being bowed outwardly in opposite directions and each strip having an inwardly directed bulge such as a or b. The bulges may be formed at an angle to the position shown and each strip may have more than bulge. The element may be made of metal, a plastics or ceramic material.
