Abstract

1,116,427. Electric tests. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Jan. 11, 1966 [Jan. 21, 1965], No.2730/65. Heading G1N. The gas content of a solid specimen is determined by melting the specimen in an evacuated space, feeding the released gas through a small leak to the ionising chamber of a mass spectrometer, and either monitoring the value of a selected mass/ charge ratio peak over a predetermined time period to determine the content of a particular gaseous component in the specimen, or using the spectrometer to identify and measure the individual component gases. The specimen is melted in a graphite crucible and the evolved gases are passed to a manifold the volume of which may be increased by means of reservoirs. From the manifold the gases pass through capillary leak to a mass spectrometer, the ion current due to a selected gas component being recorded. Several collector electrodes may be provided, each with a separate recorder, for different gas components. A McLeod pressure gauge and reservoirs containing carbon monoxide, nitrogen and hydrogen are provided for calibration. The operating procedure is described in the Specification, including the steps of outgassing, calibration, and evaluation of the results.
