Abstract

Detergent compositions comprise: (A) at least 0.01% by weight of a textile treating agent prepared by the reaction of a primary alkylamine (alkyl chain C12- 30) with epichlorohydrin in a molar ratio of epichlorohydrin to amine of from 1.25: 1 to 2: 1 at a temperature of 80-200 DEG F. for 30 minutes to 10 hours; (B) from 0-10% by weight of ingredient (A) of a nonionic surfactant whose molecule contains (i) an hydrophobic group which is a C9-C18 alkyl or an alkyl phenyl group (C9-C15 alkyl) and (ii) an hydrophilic group which consists of or includes from 10 to 60 ethylene oxide units; (C) 0-10% by weight of the total composition of a water-soluble organic solvent; and (D) the balance substantially water. Such compositions may include as an additional ingredient, 5-20% by weight of ingredient (A) of sodium tetraphosphate or sodium hexametaphosphate, or a mixture thereof. These compositions may also comprise as an additional ingredient a textile lubricant in a weight ratio of textile lubricant to ingredient (A) of from 0.125: 1 to 1.5: 1, the said textile lubricant consisting of a homogeneous water suspension of an oxidized Fischer-Tropsch wax with a chain length of C40- 55, emulsified by an emulsifier selected from (a) at least one cationic quaternary ammonium compound having the formula <FORM:1116150/C4-C5/1> where R1 is C14- 20 alkyl; R2 is C1- 3 alkyl, phenyl, naphthyl, or a C1- 3 alkyl substituted phenyl; R3 is C2- 4 alkylene; Z is an anion; and x + y ranges from 1-6 and x ranges from 1-6, and (b) mixtures of said cationic quaternary ammonium compound and said nonionic surfactant constituting ingredient (B) in a weight ratio of at least 3: 7 and wherein the weight ratio of oxidized Fischer-Tropsch wax to total of emulsifier and nonionic surfactant ranges from 10: 1 to 3: 7.ALSO:A process for preparing a water-dispersible textile treating agent comprises reacting a primary alkyl amine having from 12 to 30 carbon atoms in the alkyl chain (which may contain cycloaliphatic moieties) with epichlorohydrin in a molar ratio of epichlorohydrin to amine of from 1.25:1 to 2:1 at a temperature of from 80 DEG F. to 200 DEG F. for a period of from 30 minutes to 10 hours. The reaction product is preferably neutralized at a temperature of 60-100 DEG F. to an acid value of 5-30. Examples of primary alkyl amines which may be used in the process are those wherein the alkyl groups may be derived from naturally occurring glycerides (e.g tallow, lard) or from petroleum sources and/or olefins such as ethylene polymers. Amines included in these groups which may be use are dodecyl, tetradecyl, hexadecyl, octadecyl, pentapropylene, hexapropylene, dodecyl-cyclohexyl, eicosly and docosyl amines. The amine group is preferably attached to the terminal carbon atom of the chain. The use of these amines is in textile treatment to improve fibre-to-fibre lubricity; soften, and improve water repellency.ALSO:A composition for imparting durable effects to textile materials comprises (A) at least 0.01% by weight of a textile treating agent prepared by the reaction of a primary C12-30 alkyl amine with epichlrohydrin; (B) from 0% to 10% by weight of ingredient (A) of a non-ionic surfactant whose molecule contains (i) a hydrophobic group, which is a C9-C18 alkyl group or a C9-C15 alkyl phenyl group and (ii) a hydrophilic group which consists of or includes from 10-60 ethylene oxide groups; (C) from 0-10% by weight of the total composition of a water soluble organic solvent; and (D) the balance substantially water. 5-20% of ingredient (A) of sodium tetraphosphate or sodium hexametaphosphate may be added to the composition. A textile lubricant consisting of a homogenous water suspension of an oxidised Fischer-Tropsch wax, having a chain length from 40,55 carbon atoms, emulsified by an emulsifier selected from (a) at least one cationic quaternary ammonium compound having the formula: <FORM:1116150/D1-D2/1> where R1 is C14 - C20 alkyl; R2 is C1 - C3 alkyl, phenyl, naphthyl, or a C1 - C3 alkyl substituted phenyl; R3 is an alkylene group with 2-4 carbon atoms; Z represents an anion; and x + y ranges from 1 to 6 and x ranges from 1-6 and (b) mixtures of said cationic quaternary ammonium compound and said non ionic surfactant constituting ingredient (B) in a weight ratio of at least 3:7, and wherein the weight ratio of oxidised Fischer-Tropsch wax to total of emulsifier and non ionic surfactant ranges from 10:1 to 3:7, may also be added. The composition may be applied to filament, staple fibres or fabric, knitted or woven from thread or yarn and/or fabric which is formed by bonding. The textile material can be cotton, linen, wool, rayon, nylon, cellulose esters or chemically modified cotton. The composition is applied from an aqueous medium by dipping; circulating the dispersion through the textile material; spraying the dispersion onto the surface; and applying the dispersion to the textile material my means of a kiss roll. Thereafter the water is removed and the treated textile material is dried by heating at 80 DEG - 375 DEG F. Application of this composition to textile materials can improve their stretchability, produce durable fabric softeners, increase their lubricity, body, firmness and/or water repellency.
