Abstract

1,115,836. Fuel elements. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 30 June, 1966 [13 July, 1965], No. 29501/66. Heading G6C. In a heavy water cooled and moderated nuclear reactor, the fuel elements are supported vertically in line within a tube. The lowest element rests on a strut at the base of the tube and the uppermost element is urged downwards against the others by a spring which is seated against the biological plug shield closing the tube upper end. The tube is located between the reactor upper concrete shield and a lower, horizontal support plate. Coolant circulates vertically upwards through the tube and emerges at apertures below the concrete shield. A small flow of coolant passes from the upper end of the support tube, through the plug, to an external monitor to detect fuel can fracture. A thermo-couple records the temperature of this flow.
