The advance of a tunnelling machine to maintainthe cutting effectiveness of cutting means at the leading end of a shield of the machine is as a result of the pressure on the rear end of the shield by concrete or grout pumped into the annular space between shuttering secured to the rear of the shield, the tunnel bore excavated by the cutting means and the end of the shield, the concrete or grout forming on setting a lining to the tunnel.
