Abstract

An interpolymer of at least one monoolefin and a multi-unsaturated hydrocarbon, at least part of said hydrocarbon being bicyclo-[2.2.1]-hepta-2, 5-diene, and which is soluble in hydrocarbons, has an intrinsic viscosity in benzene at 25 DEG C. no higher than 0.4, and sufficient ethylenically unsaturated groups in the polymer molecule to permit substantial curing of films by oxidative mechanism is made by copolymerizing the monomers in the absence of oxygen in the presence of a Ziegler-type catalyst containing a transition metal. The Specification contains long lists of monomers. Exemplified monomers are mixtures of (1) ethylene, propylene, dicyclopentadiene, and bicycloheptadiene, and (2) ethylene, propylene, and bicycloheptadiene. The polymerization and recovery of the copolymers is carried out by conventional "low-pressure" methods. Molecular weight regulators such as hydrogen and dialkyl zinc may be present.ALSO:Substrates made of metals, wood glass, and plastics, are coated with a composition comprising an interpolymer of at least one monoolefin and a multi-unsaturated hydrocarbon of which at least part is bicyclo [2.2.1] hepta-2, 5-diene, and which is soluble in hydrocarbons, has an intrinsic viscosity in benzene at 25 DEG C no higher than 0.4, and is curably by an oxidative mechanism. The compositions may be solutions or dispersions in organic solvents, or water-containing emulsions. The interpolymers may be air-cured at room or elevated temperatures, and the curing may be assisted by metal driers. The substrate may be made of iron, steel, aluminium, copper, nickel, tin, wood, glass, or polyesters. In the examples interpolymers of ethylene, propylene, bicycloheptadiene, and optionally dicyclopentadiene, are coated on phosphatized steel panels and cured.
