Abstract

1,115,517. Coating apparatus. PLASTIC COATINGS Ltd. 4 April, 1967 [13 April, 1966], No. 16279/66. Heading B2L. In coating articles the articles are conveyed through a treating zone together with a powder or liquid medium while simultaneously subjecting them to a tumbling action and the powder or liquid medium is separated from the articles at the termination of the treating zone and re-introduced at the feed end of the zone so that there is continuous circulation of the powder or liquid medium during operation of the process. Suitable apparatus comprises two concentric barrels 10, 11 arranged for rotation about their common longitudinal axis, the inner barrel 11 having an archimedian worm 16 for conveying to the exit end, articles and medium fed in at the inlet end 12, and the outer barrel 10 having an archimedian worm 17 in the annular space between the drums and of opposite hand to feed the medium back to the inlet end. The inner drum 11 has perforations 18 at its exit end to permit the treating medium to pass into the annular space between the drums. In operation articles to be coated are pre-heated to between 200‹C. and 500‹C. and are fed down chute 14 into the barrel 16 which has been filled to approximately 50% of its capacity with powdered thermoplastic material. As the articles and powder are conveyed through the barrel 16 the articles pick up the required coating of the powder. After discharge the articles may be sintered.
