Abstract

1,115,511. Stretchers; ladders. J. G. BRADFORD. 2 Mach, 1966 [23 Dec., 1964; 14 May, 1965], Nos. 52251/64 and 20455/65. Headings A5X, A6L. [Also in Divisions A4, B7 and E1] A stretcher, which may be used as a ladder, comprises tubular end members 24 provided with housings 22 joned to the ends of tubular side members 23 which are in sections, the tubular members supporting a canvas sheet 27 and the joints between the side member sections and between the tubular members and the housings being by spigot and socket connections. The housings are formed' with legs 47 which may each provide part of a spigot and socket connection to a further member having a wheel (Figure 9, not shown), a ski attachment (Figures 7 and 8, not shown) or a spring loaded damper (Figure 10, not shown). The sections of each side member 23 are joined to a length of elastic (34) (Figure 2, not shown) which holds the sections together when the stetcher is collapsed, and the canvas sheet 27 is formed with slots 29 to receive straps for restraining the patient. The canvas sheet is also formed so that its edges 31 overlap the stretcher frame and the sheet is provided with a tensioning device 51 (see also Figures 17, 18, not shown.) An adjusable back support (Figure 11, not shown) may be fitted to the stretcher and members may be fitted by spigot and socket connections to the stretcher frame to support an injured limb. By fitting a number of stretchers together on top of each other (Figure 16, not shown) and end to end a stronger structure is provided which may be used for bridging a ravine. Also by fitting stretchers together end to end the stretchers can be used as a ladder and circular or square apertures 30 in the canvas provide footholds. The stretchers may also be fitted together to provide a double bunk (Figure 12, not shown), or a wheeled trolley, and, as described with reference to Figure 13 (not shown), a frame member and a sheet may be secured to one or more stretchers to form a bivouac. The housing 22 may be removably connected to the end members 24 and may be in two parts pivoting together, Figure 20 (not shown). A support for a transfusion bottle may be attached to the stretcher.
