Abstract

1,115,395. Tundishes. CONCAST A.G. 9 March, 1966 [9 March, 1965], No. 10447/66. Heading F4B. [Also in Division B3] Apparatus for changing the position of a jet of molten metal issuing from a tundish 1 in a continuous casting machine comprises a slidable plug 7 with aperture 8 and a closing element 9 with aperture 10 both in steel frames mounted in a guide 12 slidable by a hand wheel 17, a screwed portion 18 of whose spindle engages half nuts 20, 21 connected by levers 24 and 25, respectively, with the guide 12 and the element 9. Element 7 may incorporate an induction heating system to avoid freezing of metal on its top surface. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the position of elements 7 and 9 is reversed, and another modification, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), allows of sliding movement in two directions at right angles to one another. The sliding plug may incorporate a downwardlyextending spout, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), or, using a stopper nozzle for the tundish, the discharge may be through an inclined bore in a sleeve rotatably mounted axially of the tundish discharge spout, Fig. 9 (not shown). The rotatably mounted sleeve incorporates a plug rotatable therein about a horizontal axis and formed with a cross-bore, whereby the combined rotary movements allow of a universal movement for the jet of metal, Figs. 10 and 11 (not shown).
