Abstract

Hydrophobic metal powders are prepared from a flowable paste of the metal powder and one or more vinyl monomers which are inert with respect to the metal powder and are liquid under normal conditions, or are used in solution, by spray-drying the resulting paste. The metal may be zinc dust and the monomer vinyl carbazole, styrene or vinyl acetate. Examples 1,2 and 3 relate to coatings of vinyl carbazole in toluene/ethyl acetate solution, styrene in toluene/methanol, and vinyl acetate in methanol, respectively.ALSO:Hydrophobic metal powders are prepared by forming a flowable paste of the metal powder and one or more vinyl monomers which are inert with respect to the metal powder and are liquid under normal conditions or are used in solution, and spray drying the resulting paste. The process is particularly applicable to zinc dust coated with a solution of vinyl carbazole, styrene or vinyl acetate in toluene/ethyl acetate, toluene/methanol, or methanol. The coated metal powder may then be incorporated in an aqueous lacquer.
