Abstract

7 - (2,3 - Dinicotinoyloxy - propyl) - theophylline of formula <FORM:1115255/C2/1> (and acid addition salts, complexes with alkali metal salts of organic acids and a methyl iodide addition compound) is prepared by the interaction of two moles of nicotinoyl chloride and one mole of 7-(2,3-dihydroxypropyl)-theophylline.ALSO:A therapeutic composition contains the novel theophylline derivative of formula, <FORM:1115255/A5-A6/1> in association with a carrier and, optionally, with a barbiturate, e.g. phenobarbital, the composition being provided in the form of orally and rectally administerable dosage units e.g. tablets, suppositories and capsules.
