Abstract

1,115,122. Dealkylation. UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO. 23 Aug., 1965, No. 35987/65. Heading C5E. Aromatic hydrocarbons are obtained from mixtures containing alkyl aromatics and nitrogen and/or sulphur impurities by contacting with a solid adsorbent selective for aromatics, recovering the aromatics and subjecting to catalytic hydrodealkylation, the feed being catalytically hydrorefined before the dealkylation. The adsorbent may be one which recovers all aromatics e.g. silica gel, alumina or a zeolitic molecular sieve or one which is selective for polycyclic compounds, e.g. activated carbon. The adsorbate is desorbed, preferably with a lower boiling aromatic such as the dealkylation product and dealkylated at 538-816‹ C. and 20-66À6 atm. g. over a catalyst consisting of a Group V, VI or VIII metal. The hydrorefining step may be effected before or after the separating step.
