Abstract
Cellulosic fabrics, e.g. fabrics containing cotton or viscose rayon fibres alone or in admixture with polyester fibres, are crease proofed and softened by treating them with an aqueous solution containing 1-10% by weight of formaldehyde or a formaldehyde polymer containing not more than 6 carbon atoms, 2-20% by weight of glyoxal, acrylic aldehyde or methylacrylic aldehyde or 4-40% by weight of glutaraldehyde, and not more than 10% by weight of a catalyst mixture, the components of which are preferably present in approximately equal amounts, comprising (1) and acid salt of a primary aliphatic amine RNH2X in which R is an alkyl group having no more than 6 carbon atoms and X is an acid and (2) a quaternary ammonium salt having the formula R-Y-CH2-NR1R2R3 Hal in which R is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical having 12-18 carbon atoms, Y is -O-or-CONH-NR1R2R3, is a residue of a heterocyclic tertiary amine or aliphatic tertiary amine and Hal is halogen, preferably to a wet pick-up of 65-85% by weight, and then heating the fabrics at 220 DEG -350 DEG F, preferably for 1-10 minutes, if desired with an intermediate drying at 200 DEG -260 DEG F for 0.5-2 minutes and a subsequent washing with water or soap and water to remove unreacted aldehyde and non-bound reaction products. The amine salt may be one formed from monoethanomine, butanolamine, ethylamine, 2-amino-1-butanol, 2-amino-2-methyl-1,3-propane diol, 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol, 2-amino-2-ethyl-1,3 propane diol or tris (hydroxymethyl)- aminomethane and hydrochloric, sulphuric, nitric, phosphoric or citric acid and suitable quaternary ammonium salts are stearamide methyl pyridinium chloride, octadecyl oxymethyl pyridinium chloride, oleyloxy-methyl pyridinium chloride, stearamide methyl picolinium chloride and stearamide methyl quinolinium chloride. The solution may also contain 1.5-2.5% by weight of a third catalyst constituent which is a halide, oxyhalide, nitrate or sulphate of a metal of groups 2, 3 or 4 of the Periodic Table, e.g. calcium and magnesium chlorides, nitrates, bromides, chlorates and iodides, aluminium chloride or sulphate, boron fluoride, zinc silicofluoride and zirconium oxychloride, and/or citric, acetic, monochloracetic or formic acid, 0.1-5% by weight of a buffer, e.g. di- or tri-methylol melamine, a triazine urea formaldehyde resin precondensate, dimethylol ethylene urea, dimethylol dihydroxy ethylene urea and dicyandiamide, or esters of stearly alcohol and di- or tri-methylol melamine and 0.5-4% by weight of glycerine, glucose or sorbitol.
