Abstract

1,114,679. Refrigerating. SIBANY MANUFACTURING CORPORATION. 17 May, 1965 [18 May, 1964], No. 20709/65. Heading F4H. In a heat pump of the type comprising heat-exchangers 14, 141 mounted on opposite ends of a rotatable shaft 2 having refrigerant passages 20, 58, 60 therein, the refrigerant is compressed by deformation of a flexible tube through which the refrigerant passes. In the embodiment shown, passages 58 and 60 communicate with opposite ends of a flexible walled annular chamber 66 which rotates with the shaft past fixed rollers 80. Each heat-exchanger comprises two spokes carrying annular tubes 36, 36<SP>1</SP>, ducts 44, 441 in one spoke of each exchanger communicating with the opposite ends of passage 20, and ducts 46, 461 in the other spokes communicating with the ends of passages 58 and 60, respectively. Passage 20 includes a restriction 22. Shaft 2 forms the rotor of an electric motor 4 and its direction of rotation is reversible to reverse the functions of heat exchangers 14, 14<SP>1</SP>. The degree of refrigerant compression in chamber 66 may be varied thermostatically by altering the distance of the rollers 80 from the axis of rotation via a cam arrangement (Fig. 2, not shown). The heat pump may be mounted in a casing installed in a window (Fig. 9, not shown). Deformation of the flexible walled annular chamber may be effected by rollers acting on its inner wall (Fig. 8, not shown) or by the action of an eccentrically mounted ring on its outer or inner surfaces (Figs. 13 and 14, not shown, respectively), the chamber being fixed in the embodiments of Figs. 8 and 14.
