Abstract
1,114,459. Electrophysical measurement; moisture. INDUSTRIAL NUCLEONICS CORPORATION. Dec. 17, 1965 [Dec. 24, 1964], No. 53739/65. Heading G1A and G1M. Apparatus for measuring the moisture content of paper leaving a drying unit, comprises a sensing head arranged to scan across the width of the paper, carrying a capacitative moisture probe and an infrared temperature sensor to provide a temperature compensated humidity signal. The infrared detector has a further thermistor providing a signal to compensate for variations in the ambient temperature of its housing. A further measuring head detecting beta radiation through the paper may be provided to gauge the "weight" of the paper. In a preferred embodiment the moisture signal is derived from a dual frequency servo null system Fig. 7, similar to that disclosed in 939669. L. F. and H. F. signals are fed (i) through a phase inverter 168 to the sensing probes 130, 132, and (ii) through a balancing capacitor 174 to junction point 170. Any out of balance signal due to moisture variation is amplified at 176 and fed to H. F. and L. F. demodulators 182, 184. The amplitude difference between these signals energizes a servomotor 188 (i) to drive a potentiometer 166 in the output of the L. F. oscillator to rebalance the system, and (ii) to drive a potentiometer 190 providing a millivolt signal at the tapping proportional to the moisture content of the paper. The thermistors 70, 120 connected in resistance network 198 add a correcting signal when the temperature deviates from a standard setting, to provide a compensated output at 914, 196. INFRARED DETECTOR comprises a heat insulating housing Fig. 2, insulated from the atmosphere by a dead-air space between windows 68, 104 and containing a thermistor 70 with a blackened silver foil heat absorber disc 72 suspended from a pair of thin copper wires 74 at the focus of a mirror 98. A further thermistor 120 is mounted at the edge of the mirror to detect variations in the ambient temperature in the housing.
