Abstract

A pressure-sensitive adhesive is made by reacting one or more polyols having at least 3 OH groups per molecule, with or without one or more diols and/or one or more mono-ols, and the stoichiometrical amount of an organic polyisocyanate, the OH-containing compounds being in sufficient proportions dependent on their molecular weights to produce a fully cross-linked reaction product with the isocyanate, the reaction product having an average chain length of from 130 to 285 chain-atoms. Reactants specified are: polyols-sorbitol, arabitol, pentaerythritol, glycerol, and reaction products of these with propylene oxide and/or ethylene oxide; diols-polyethylene glycol and polypropylene glycol; mono-ols-methyloxitol and n-butanol; polyisocyanates-4,41-diisocyanato-diphenylmethane, 2,4- and 2,6-tolylene diisocyanates, hexamethylene diisocyanate, triphenylmethanetriisocyanate, 2,4,41 - triisocyanato-diphenylether, and polymethylenepolyphenylisocyanate. Usually an accelerator, e.g. dibutyltin dilaurate or stannous octoate, is added to the reaction mixture prior to curing. Antioxidants may also be added. The method of calculating the chain length in terms of numbers of atoms is described. In a typical Example (1) various triols were individually mixed with 4,41-diisocyanatodiphenylmethane, in the presence of dibutyltin dilaurate, and cured at various temperatures to yield pressure-sensitive adhesives. The reactants are preferably applied in liquid form to a substrate, such as a paper or cloth fabric or a thin plastic sheet, whereon they react to form the adhesive.ALSO:A pressure-sensitive adhesive polyurethane, having an average chain-length of from 130 to 285 chain-atoms, is formed in situ by applying the reactants, viz one or more polyols containing at least 3 OH groups per molecule, with or without diols and/ monools, and organic polyisocyanates. (see Division C3), in liquid form to a substrate, such as a paper or cloth fabric or a thin plastics sheet, whereon they react at room or elevated temperature to form the desired adhesive.
