Abstract
1,112,964. Cleaning tubes by shock-waves. CABOT CORPORATION. 5 July, 1965 [13 July, 1964; 4 Jan., 1965], No. 28282/65. Heading F2N. A gas stream carrying suspended particulate solids is passed through elongated passages 2 in a heat exchanger on to which the said solids tend to adhere; objectionable build-up of these solid deposits is prevented by periodically propagating a pressure pulse or shock-wave through the gas stream in a direction opposite to its regular flow. The shock-wave may be produced by chemical, mechanical or other known means. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1 the shock is produced by a short pulse discharge of a gas or of air from orifices 10 in outlets 8 spaced along a tube 22 at a predetermined distance from the outlets of the exchanger passages 2. The discharges, which take place at intervals of between 5 to 40 minutes, are controlled by a solenoid or other valve 16. Other rows of the exchanger tubes 2 parallel to the row shown in Fig. 1 (Fig. 3, not shown), may have similar rows of orifices 10 facing their ends, the various rows of orifices being discharged at separate intervals.
