In a filing cabinet comprising a vertical framework in which there is a vertically movable frame F carrying a vertical stack of filing drawers D, the frame is operated by an endless chain C and gearing arrangement from an electric motor M 1 to present a selected drawer D opposite a presentation opening in the framework F, and the drawer is presented substantially horizontally through the opening, and subsequently retracted, by a further motor arrangement (M 2 , Figs. 6 and 7). On the front of the framework F is a keyboard (1, Fig. 1) comprising a series of keys (6) for drawer selection, push buttons (7, 8) for presentation and retraction of the drawers, and an alphabetical list plate (4). The motor (M 2 ) operates through a worm screw, a helicoidal wheel, a slipping clutch, and a drive shaft (15, Fig. 5) to drive an endless chain (18) mounted on pinions (17, 19, Fig. 7), and the chains engage two slide rails (20) mounted on rollers (25) to move a selected drawer D. The rails (20) are connected together at the front by a cross-piece (21) having a drawer-engaging arrangement (22) thereon which automatically engages a roller (24) on each drawer at the presentation opening. The electric circuit includes resiliently mounted contact pins (P, Figs. 4 and 7) secured in the framework F on each side of the drawers D, and arranged above and below the presentation opening. If a drawer D is not positioned accurately for presentation, a safety device breaks the circuit. The safety device comprises a rod (A, Figs. 7 and 10) provided with notches corresponding in number to the number of drawers, and a microswitch roller which engages a notch when a drawer is accurately positioned. When a required drawer is already in position, the circuit is arranged so that only the button 7 need be pressed.
