Abstract

Apparatus for metering and smoothing a liquid composition applied to a web comprises means for conveying a web through coating and metering stations, a backing support member extending up to a certain position along the web path, a doctor blade mounted in a holder and flexed against the web where supported by the backing member, a free margin of the blade extending beyond this point in the direction of web travel, and means for adjusting the course of the web to lie in parallel juxtaposed relationship with the free margin of the blade. The doctor blade is preferably of spring leaf steel clamped between two pressure members. The blade holder is capable of movement laterally towards and away from the backing member and also of movement along an arc of a circle to vary the angular disposition of the blade. The backing member is preferably a rotatable roller. The means for adjusting the web path preferably comprises a displaceable and freely rotatable roller over which the web passes. The doctor blade is shown when employed with several different types of roller coating apparatus, the level of coating liquid in the trough being maintained constant and means also being provided for heating the liquid. The coating liquid may also be applied by electrostatic coating techniques. The coated web may be stretched, buffed or calendered. The apparatus is particularly useful in smoothing liquid coatings applied to web materials for use in photographic processes.
