Abstract

111,210. Brown, H. P., and Johnston, C. L. Feb. 6, 1917. Folding paper.- Sheets of paper for towels, toilet papers, &c. are cut from two webs and interfolded by a pair of co-operating inter-folding cylinders, from which thev are delivered in zigzag fashion by aid of stripping and controlling devices to endless carrierbands. One edge of each sheet is preferably folded to strengthen it, this fold coinciding with the fold at the middle of the next interleaved sheet. A mark may be made at intervals on the folded edge of a section, so that the delivered sections may be divided into batches of predetermined number for packing, &c. Fig. 4 shows a sectional view through the pair of cylinders 10, 11 to each of which a web 15 is fed, as shown, and is cut into sheets by blades 18 on revolving arms 19 cooperating with cutting-slots 20 on the cylinders 10, 11. In rear of each slot 20 is a set of impaling- pins 24 and a folding-blade 13. On the cylinders, midway between the two sets of pins 24 and blades 13, are folding-grippers 12 which nip the folds of the sheets as they are tucked into them by the blades 13 of the opposite cylinder. Near each gripper 12 is a set of impaling-pins 14 which operate to transfer the folded papers from one cylinder to the other so that they are delivered alternately from the cylinders in zigzag form as shown. The grippers 12 and pins 24, 14 are operated by cams so as to engage and release the paper at the required times. As the web of paper is cut by the blades 18 it is held by a rubber gripping-block 21 in front of each blade. In the rear of each blade IS is a spring-pressed block 22 which forces the severed end of the web down forward of the folding-blade 13 while the pins 24 pierce it. As the cuts are made forward of the blades 13, a sheet near its forward edge from one cylinder and the middle line of the next sheet from the other cylinder, are folded together into the grippers 12, as shown. The sheets are stripped from the cylinders by rocking fingers 44 entering grooves in the cylinders and acting to transfer the alternate folded edges to intermittently rotating tumblers 47 having longitudinal ribs or teeth which engage the folded edges and direct them on to the delivery bands 52, 67, 70. A mark is made as at x on the edge of a fold at the required intervals by a marking-block on a cylinder geared to the cylinder 11, the web 15 being passed round the marking cylinder as it is fed to the cylinder 11, and the marking block being timed by the driving-gear to co-operate with an opposed platen at every 25th revolution or as required.
