Cement with an etched surface is produced by placing in a mould a pad of absorbent material carrying a water-soluble substance which inhibits the setting of cement, placing cement mix in the mould, allowing the uninhibited cement to set, removing the absorbent pad and removing the unset concrete by, for example, brushing. The absorbent pad may be made of several layers of paper and contain an absorbed solution of suchrose. The paper is dried and placed in the mould (which is preferably of a waterrepellent material) in the positions to give the required effect. The depth of etching can be varied by varying the concentration of the etching solution and the pad is preferably moistened before removal. The cement mix may contain layers of different material so that a different effect is seen below the etched parts.
