Abstract

1,111,690. Diapers. RIEGEL TEXTILE CORPORATION. 10 Aug., 1965 [24 Aug., 1964], No. 34254/65. Heading A3V. [Also in Division D1] Apparatus for forming folded diapers automatically from a continuous web comprises a motor 43 driving directly, or through a reduction unit 40, supply, feed, folding, fold-securing, cutting and stacking means all supported on a fixed frame 10. A supply roller 18 is associated with stop means 44 actuated, when the material on the roll is exhausted, by engagement of the roller with lever 45 connected to a switch 55. The web 12 is drawn by adjustable feed rollers 56, 57 around guide rolls 20-23 to a folding mechanism 13 where it is threaded about pairs of swords (70) and (71), (74) and (75), (76) and (77) supported on rods (72), (73) (Figs. 10, 10A, not shown) to form the folds shown in Fig. 2. The folded web is guided round a fabric covered roller 82 to sewing machines 84, 85 which have sensing fingers (111), (112), (Fig. 3) extending within the folds of the web which actuate a switch (121) to stop the motor if there is a break in either line. of stitching. The stitched web next passes through a. guillotine cutting mechanism, Figs. 4 and 11 not shown, operated intermittently by cam means to form diapers 17 of predetermined length which are carried to stacking means 16 by conveyers 170. The diaper edges are sandwiched between the conveyers and plates (185), (186), Fig. 4, pivotable to allow each diaper to fall on to a shelf 230 which is raised and lowered to accommodate the diapers by means of chains 212-215 driven by sprocket shafts connected to the motor 43.
