Abstract
1,111,499. Measuring melt flow index. WERNER & PFLEIDERER. June 13, 1966 [June 26, 1965], No. 26300/66. Heading G1N. The melt flow index of plastics material is determined by the time taken for a loaded piston to extrude a measured quantity through a hole of known diameter. As shown, the piston 5, attached by rod 6 to a platform 8 carrying weight 9, is located in a test cylinder 2. Plastics material produced in a machine 12 is forced past a valve 13 into the cylinder 2, raising the piston 5 and platform 8 until it trips a switch 15 to prepare a time switch 16 and close valve 13. When the temperature inside cylinder 2 reaches a predetermined value, switch 16 releases catch 14 and the piston 5 falls, forcing the plastics out through a nozzle 4. The time taken to fall is measured by two switches 17, 19 which start and stop respectively a motor-driven potentiometer 18, the end position being shown on a recorder 20, whose sensitivity, or the speed of the motor, is adjusted at 21 in accordance with the known density of the material at the preset temperature. The test is continuously repeated and the results may be used to control machine 12.
