Abstract

1,111,344. Connecting cable to terminals; preventing corrosion. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. 3 Feb., 1967 [4 Feb., 1966; 8 Feb., 1966], Nos. 5064/66 and 5474/66. Heading H2E. The risk of corrosion due to the difference in electromotive potential between an aluminium conductor and a copper or brass terminal is reduced by inserting between the conductor and terminal an intermediary member made of, or at least an outer skin of which is made of, a metal which lies between copper and aluminium in the electromotive series or of an alloy whose main constituent is such a metal. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, the intermediary member takes the form of a readily deformable copper tube 4 which is tin-plated on its inner and outer surfaces. The tube is crimped around the ends 2 of bared aluminium wires 1 and inserted into the socket 7 of a copper or brass terminal 6 and held therein by a pinching screw 8. In another embodiment a tube of copper tin-plated inside and out is placed around a threaded binding part (16, Fig. 2, not shown), the bared end of an aluminium conductor being clamped between washers of the same material as the tube. In a third embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown), the ends of two aluminium conductors are scarfed such that together they form a conductor of roughly circular cross-section which is inserted in a tin-plated copper tube which is then inserted in a malleable sleeve connector, the sleeve then being crimped around the tube and conductor. One end of the tube may be closed as at 5, Fig. 1, such that the ends of the conductors are prevented from passing right through the tube and being bent over to contact the terminal.
