Abstract

1,110,342. Piston and joint-making packing; shaft seals. CROSS MANUFACTURING CO. (1938) Ltd. 18 Jan., 1967 [13 April, 1966], No. 16151/66. Headings F2B and F2T. Sealing means between coaxial cylindrical surfaces 2, 8 of two relatively static or relatively movable members, e.g. a piston 1 and a cylinder 7, comprises outer and inner rings 10 and 11, respectively, of circular or other smoothly curved section wire housed in mutual line contact in a groove 3 in one of the cylindrical surfaces, at least one ring 10 being in contact with one side 4 of the groove and another ring 11 being in contact with the other side 5 of the groove and at least one ring 10 engaging the other cylindrical surface 8. The rings 10, 11 are made of spring steel and split so that they tend to expand radially and also urge one another axially against the respective sides of the groove. In a modification, Fig. 2, two outer rings 10 are urged against the cylinder wall 8 and the sides of the groove by an inner ring 11. In a further modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), four outer and three inner rings are housed in the groove (3). When two or more inner or outer rings are used each ring may comprise a turn of a multi-coil helical ring.
