Abstract

Lubricating oil is obtained from an asphaltic residuum containing 2-70% vol. of asphalt by hydrocracking in contact with a siliceous base hydrocracking catalyst at a space velocity below 1.0 and a pressure above 1500 p.s.i.g. Residuum boiling above 650 DEG F. is hydrocracked at 371-482 DEG C. with 5000-20,000 SCF of hydrogen per barrel to maintain a conversion to products boiling below 650 DEG F. of 15-70% vol. and the product boiling above 650 DEG F. preferably dewaxed and percolated through clay, bauxite, "Porocel" (Registered Trade Mark), fuller's earth or activated charcoal, to obtain a lubricating oil having a viscosity index above 100. The catalyst comprises a hydrogenating component on a siliceous cracking base. Preferably part of the product boiling in the range 400-700 DEG F. is recycled to the process. Lubricating oils, turbine oils or automatic transmission fluids comprise the product of the above process with conventional additives incorporated: viscosity index improvers such as isobutylene or methacrylate polymers; detergents such as metal sulphonates (e.g. barium wax-benzene-sulphonate oleate or wax phenol sulphonate) metal phenates (e.g. barium phenate) and metal naphthenates; antioxidants such as zinc dithiophosphates (e.g. zinc dihexyl dithiophosphate) or alkylated phenols (e.g. 2,6-ditertiary butyl paracresol); and rust inhibitors, e.g. oleic acid-triethylene tetramine-tetrapropenyl succinic anhydride reaction product.
