Abstract

1,109,021. Coating apparatus. HITACHI SHIPBUILDING & ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. 15 July, 1966, No. 31924/66. Heading B2L. A surface coating device adapted to coat the hull plating of a ship or similar wall surface comprises a suspension frame 1 for suspension in proximity to the surface to be coated, a movable member 11 mounted on said frame in such a manner that it may reciprocate relatively to the frame and a spraying nozzle 27 mounted on the member 11 so that it may move along the length thereof, there being separate independent means 37 and 18 for driving the nozzle 27 and for driving the member 11. The driving means 37 and 19 are preferably electric motors and drive the nozzle 27 and member 11 through suitable chain and sprochet gearing. The frame 1 may be suspended by ropes 5 having turnbuckles 6 for adjusting the lengths of the ropes, the turnbuckles 6 having rollers 8 for engaging a rope 9 such that the frame can be adjusted vertically and horizontally over the surface to be coated. The nozzle 27 is mounted on a pantagraph like link structure so as to be movable towards and away from the surface to be coated and preferably such movement is automatically controlled so as to maintain the nozzle at a fixed distance from the surface. Such control means may consist of an inductance pick-up operating through suitable electric means, a hydraulic piston for moving the nozzle.
