Abstract

1,107,714. Hydrostatic transmissions. DOWTY TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. 13 April, 1965 [18 April, 1964], No. 16186/64. Heading F2C. An hydraulic power transmission comprises a tilting head pump 4 and motor 2 mounted on a support maintaining the parallel tilting axes MT, PT and the drive shafts 1, 3 in fixed relative positions, a link 7 being pivoted at MP, PP to extensions 8, 9 of the motor and pump. The pump is tilted from a dead centre position, wherein axes MP, PP, PT lie in a plane, angle PP, PT, MT is acute and distance MP-PT is greater than MT-PT, by a servo 11 and thus tilts motor 2. In this dead centre position the pump displacement is zero and motor displacement is maximum and the quadrilateral linkage MP-MT, MT-PT, PTPP, PP-MP is such that initial movements of pump 4 to either side of the dead centre position for forward and reverse drive, produces very small movements of the motor. The servo 11 normally has limited movement to prevent the motor reaching a dead centre position with axes MT, MP, PP in a plane, but should it be necessary for the motor to reach this position then a second servo acting on the motor is provided. The pump may have its zero displacement position not coinciding with the dead centre position so that the forward speed ratio may be greater than the reverse ratio. The link 7 may be a pair of rods housing the hydraulic connection between the pump and motor. In Fig. 3, (not shown), the linkage is as in Fig. 2, but the shafts 1, 3 are parallel. In Fig. 5, (not shown), the shafts are parallel with the angle PP, PT, MT obtuse as it is in, Fig. 7, (not shown), wherein the distance PTMP is less than MT-PT and the shafts 1, 3 are at right angles. The pump on motor, Fig. 8, (not shown), has an annular flange on the drive shaft having sockets for ball joints on the ends of pistons slidable in a block rotatably mounted in a head which can pivot relative to the flange. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 978,603; 979,532; 994,794 and 994,797.
