Abstract

Gloss stability is imparted to a normally phase unstable wax/copolymer blend by (a) maintaining the blend constant for at least 0.1 second at a temperature 0.1 to 10 DEG F. above the melting point of the wax and then (b) allowing the blend to cool below its solidification temperature. The preferred wax is a distillate paraffin wax and preferred copolymers are ethylene/vinyl acetate and ethylene/propylene. In Example 5 bloom suppression agents or gloss stabilizers are added these being: low density polyethylene aluminium, sodium, potassium and zinc stearates, polyvinyl stearate and stearic acid amide.ALSO:Gloss stability is imparted to a normally phase unstable wax/copolymer blend by (a) maintaining the blend constant for at least 0.1 second at a temperature 0.1 to 10 DEG F. above the melting point of the wax and then (b) allowing the blend to cool below its solidification temperature. The wax may be a distillate (paraffin) or a residual (microcrystalline and/or paraffin) wax. Preferred copolymers are ethylene/vinyl acetate and ethylene/propylene; the polymer usually constitutes not more than 50%, preferably not more than 35%, by weight of the composition. In Example 5 bloom suppression agents or gloss stabilizers are added these being: low density polyethylene, aluminium, sodium, potassium or zinc stearates, polyvinyl stearate or stearic acid amide. The blend may be applied molten to a substrate.ALSO:Substrates are coated with a normally phase unstable wax/copolymer blend that has had gloss stability imparted to it by (a) maintaining the blend constant for at least 0.1 seconds at a temperature 0.1 to 10 DEG F above the melting point of the wax and then (b) allowing the blend to cool below its solidification temperature. In Examples a sulphite paper was coated on both sides by dipping it in a controlled temperature bath of molten wax/copolymer and subsequently running the paper between rollers to squeeze out excess wax/copolymer. The blends used were distillate paraffin wax with an ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer.
