Abstract

Polyalkylene oxide polyols of formula [HO(alk-O)n]mQ are reacted with excess aryl sulphonyl chloride in an amount up to 5% greater than the stoichiometric proportion in the presence of sufficient triethylamine to combine with the hydrochloric acid formed but not more than 10% in excess of this amount, to give the aryl sulphonate esters of formula [ArSO2O(alk-O)n]mQ in which Ar is an aromatic group, e.g. phenyl, p - tolyl, p - chlorophenyl, p - bromophenyl, p - anisyl or m - nitrophenyl; Q is the hydrocarbon residue of a C2-C6 aliphatic polyol having 2 or 3 hydroxy groups; alk is a divalent alkylene group, m is 2 or 3; and n is 3-20, the product of n and m having a maximum of about 50. The starting polyol compounds may be used in the form of a mixture.ALSO:Polyalkylene oxide polyols of formula [HO(alk-O)n]mQ are reacted with excess aryl sulphonyl chloride in an amount up to 5% greater than the stoichiometric proportion in the presence of sufficient triethylamine to combine with the hydrochloric acid formed but not more than 10% in excess of this amount to give the aryl sulphonate esters of formula [ArSO2O(alk-O)n]mQ in which Ar is an aromatic group, e.g. phenyl, p-tolyl, p-chlorophenyl, p-bromophenyl, p-anisyl r m-nitrophenyl; Q is the hydrocarbon residue of a C2-C6 aliphatic polyol having 2 or 3 hydroxyl groups; m is 2 or 3; alk is a divalent alkylene group; and n is 3-20, the product of n and m having a maximum of about 50. The starting polyols may be used in the form of a mixture. The process is preferably carried out in the presence of a non-aqueous solvent, e.g. benzene, toluene, xylene, ethers such as diethyl ethers, chlorinated hydrocarbons, e.g. methylene chloride and ketones, e.g. acetone. The starting polyol compound may be purified by a process of reduction before use.
