Abstract
1,107,230. Silo top unloader. BUTLER MANUFACTURING CO. 20 Dec., 1966, No. 56982/66. Heading B8E. A silage handling apparatus for loading and unloading a silo comprises a sweep arm auger in engagement with the top of the silage and a central channel former to make and maintain a central channel for the discharge of the silage. A pair of augers 74 are suspended by cables for heightwise adjustment in the silo and for rotation therein upon a drive ring 64 in a conventional manner. The augers are mounted in a framework 24 comprising rods 26 slidable in boxes 28 fixed at the centre of the silo by a suspension stem 42 so that the auger can be moved radially inwards from the discharging position shown to a loading position, manually or as by a motor 150 acting on control arms 164 as through a crank mechanism. The framework is rotated within the silo by a motor 58 and the augers are reversibly driven by a motor 98. A hopper 112 is mounted on the framework 24 above the inner ends of the augers and has channel former 122 provided with cutters 148 depending from it below the augers. To load the silo the augers are withdrawn radially inwards a set distance and are rotated to feed silage outwards as it is fed to them from the hopper 112. As the silage builds up at the periphery of the silo it contacts a pressure switch 176 which starts the motor 58 to rotate the framework to the next loading position. During loading the former 122 makes a central channel in the silage. To unload with the augers in the position shown they are rotated to feed the silage towards the former 122 through which, and the formed channel, it falls for discharge, from the bottom. During discharge the framework is rotated within the silo and as the former is lowered it maintains the central channel with the aid of its cutters 148. In a modification a winch drum and cable are used to position the framework. In each construction a lid 134 is provided to close the former during loading and in each case the movement of the framework to its unloading position is designed to open the lid.
