A starter/generator S/G rotates an engine E through gears G1 G2, one-way clutch Cl and after the engine has started it drives the starter/ generator S/G through gears G3, G4 and oneway clutch C2. In Fig. 2 (not shown), the oneway clutches are incorporated in the larger diameter gears G2 and G4.
