Abstract
Detergent alkylate is purified to reduce the bromine number to below 0.1 and reduce the formation of coloured products on sulphonation by a hydrogenative treatment in the presence of palladium or platinum metal at not more than 5 atmospheres. Reaction is effected at 0-150 DEG C. with a flow rate of not more than 1 vol./ vol./hr. The catalyst is supported. Flow may be countercurrent or cocurrent with a liquid full reactor or trickle phase conditions. Hydrogenation should not be sufficient to form an unacceptable amount of unsulphonatable oil.
