In hydraulically-assisted motor vehicle steering mechanism including a steering shaft 1 axially displaceable in a housing, sealing means disposed between the shaft 1 and the housing and arranged to accommodate misalignment of the shaft and housing comprises a ring 53 inserted in the housing with radial clearance 54 and elastic sealing members 56, 57 provided between the ring and the shaft and between the ring and a radial wall 55 in the housing. The sealing members 56, 57 occupy respective grooves in the shaft 1 and ring 53. A retaining ring 58 positions the ring 53 so that the sealing member 57 is compressed.
