Abstract

1,105,856. Polyamide yarns. NIPPON RAYON. KABUSHIKI KAISHA. 4 Feb., 1966 [5 Feb., 1965], No. 5044/66. Heading B5B A process for the heat treatment of polyamide yams comprises heating a polyamide yarn for at least 60 minutes in a substantially inert atmosphere at a temperature within the range of from 150‹ C. to 10‹ C. below the melting point of the polyamide yarn under a tension of at least 0.05 g.p.d. Heating may be effected for not more than 300 minutes, suitably with the yarn under a tension not greater than 2.0 g.p.d., and especially with the yam under a tension of from 0.1 to 1.0 g.p.d. The polyamide yarn may be made of synthetic liner polyamide, suitably poly-#-caproamide, polyhexamethylene - adipamide, poly - hexamethylene - sebacamide, poly - 11 - amino - undecanamide, polylaurineamide, or a copolymerized polyamide. The inert atmosphere suitably contains at least 80% by volume of an inert gas, and specified inert gases comprise nitrogen, carbon dioxide, argon or hydrogen. Suitably, the polyamide yarn is heated in a closed vessel. Poly-#- caproamide is suitably heated at from 160‹ C: to 200‹ C., and especially at 180‹ C. to 190‹ C: for more than 160 minutes; poly-hexamethylene-adipamide yarn is suitably heated at from 160‹ C. to 220‹ C. Yarn may be wound under tension on to a core before heat-treatment. In a preferred embodiment, a polyamide yarn is wound under tension around a core, the wound polyamide yarn is charged into a closed vessel, and the yarn heated for 60 to 300 minutes in an inert atmosphere containing an inert gas in a proportion of not less than 80% by volume at a temperature from 150‹ C. up to 10‹ C. below the melting point of the polyamide yarn under a tension of from 0.05 to 2.0 g.p.d. Yarns so treated are especially suitable for the manufacture of tyre cord. Examples are given:
