Alkenyl polymers, preferably halogenated, are reacted with compounds containing a 5- or 6-membered ring with one or more nitrogen hetero atoms, the ring also forming part of two separate benzene rings having attached directly or indirectly to one or both benzene rings or to a nitrogen hetero atom one or more hydrocarbyl groups, of preferably 20-150C and M.W. of 280-2100, and attached to one or both benzene rings one or two of the groups ZSO3-, ZSO2-, ZS-, and ZO-, where Z is a metal or the residue of an organic base. By the term "directly" is meant that the hydrocarbyl group is directly attached to a C or N atom in a ring and by the term "indirectly" is meant that it is attached to a C atom in a ring by an (-S-), (-NH-), (-O-) or <FORM:1105737/C3/1> linkage. In preparations (1) chlorinated polyisobutene is reacted with an equimolar quantity of phenothiazine to obtain 10-polyisobutenyl phenothiazine and (3) 4polyisobutenyl diphenylamine is ring closed with sulphur to 3-polyisobutenyl phenothiazine.ALSO:A lubricating or fuel oil composition comprises a major proportion of a lubricating oil or a fuel oil and a minor proportion by weight of a heterocyclic compound containing a 5- or 6-membered ring with one or more nitrogen hetero atoms, the ring also forming part of two separate benzene rings having attached directly or indirectly to one or both benzene rings or to a nitrogen hetero atom one or more hydrocarbyl groups of preferably 20-150 C and M.W. of 280-2100, and attached to one or both benzene rings, one or two of the groups ZSO3-, ZSO2-, ZS-, and ZO, where Z is a metal or the residue of an organic base. By the term "directly" is meant that the hydrocarbyl group is directly attached to a C or N atom in a ring and by the term "indirectly" is meant that it is attached to a C atom in a ring by an (-S-), (-NH-), (-O-) or (-N-) linkage. The lubricating oil may be mineral, fatty or synthetic and may also contain phenol sulphide salts and polymeric esters. The fuel oil may be gasoline, gas oil, kerosene or diesel oil.ALSO:Novel compounds containing a 5- or 6-membered ring with one or more nitrogen hetero atoms, the ring also forming part of two separate benzene rings having attached directly or indirectly to one or both benzene rings or to a nitrogen hetero atom one or more hydrocarbyl groups of preferably 20-150 C and M.W. of 280-2100, and attached to one or both benzene rings, one or two of the groups ZSO3-, ZSO2-ZS-, and ZO, where Z is a metal or the residue of an organic base, are prepared, in the case of the sulphonic derivatives by introducing a hydrocarbyl group into the appropriate heterocyclic compound by reaction with a hydrocarbyl halide, the product thus obtained being reacted with one to two moles per mole of product of a sulphonating agent and the sulphonic acid thus obtained neutralized with a base and in the case of the phenolates, by synthesis from the heterocycle which has a hydroxy group attached to a benzene ring. By the term "directly" is meant that the hydrocarbyl group is directly attached to a C or N atom in a ring and by the term "indirectly" is meant that it is attached to a C atom in a ring by an (-S-), (-NH-), (-O-) or <FORM:1105737/C2/1> linkage. The compounds are used as additives to lubricant or fuel oils (see Division C5).
