Abstract

[Also in Division B4] A ratchet-and-pawl type screwdriver has a handle 11 extending radially of the ratchet wheel 17 and the handle houses a plunger 19 which is operable to move into engagement with the ratchet wheel 17 to drive the latter with respect to the pawl for effecting additional drive to the driven member. The tubular handle is slotted longitudinally at 12 to form lugs which provide bearing support for a pin 16 carrying the ratchet wheel 17, the two ends of the pin being shaped as screwdriver blades 28, 29. Two pawls 20, 21 in the form of leaf springs for engagement with the ratchet wheel are riveted respectively to the handle 11 and to the plunger 19 which is normally held out of engagement with the ratchet-wheel by a spring 24. To tighten a normal right-handed screw, the blade 28 is engaged in the screw slot and the handle is oscillated about the axis 16. If the friction between the screw and the member into which it is being screwed does not exceed the spring-friction load of the pawl 20 and ratchetwheel 17, anticlockwise movement of the handle will result in the screw being unscrewed and, in these circumstances, the plunger 19 is depressed repeatedly whereupon the pawl 21 engages the teeth of the ratchet wheel one at a time and rotates the same.
